Inlays and onlays are indirect restorations, also known as partial crowns or tailor-made fillings, which are provided to restore moderately to severely damaged teeth at the back of the mouth. They are made out of the mouth, usually of porcelain (ceramic), composite resin, or occasionally gold, and bonded to the tooth. This oblique method permits greater strength and precision.

The Inlay vs. Onlay.

  • An Inlay is placed inside the chewing area, and it is in a cavity between the tooth cusps (tooth points).
  • An onlay is more comprehensive, as it covers one or several cusps and provides structural support across the biting surface.

Key Indications

  • Large Cavities : When the decay has become too large to use a traditional composite or amalgam restoration, but the decay has not progressed enough to necessitate removing all of the healthy structure in favour of doing a full crown.
  • Fractured or Weakened Cusps : This is the best way to restore a broken tooth or a tooth with a weak cusp, as it is placed in layers around the fractured or weak part, helping to protect it so that the tooth is not entirely compromised.
  • Filling Replacements Failing Fillings : These are aimed at replacing ageing, large metal or composite fillings that are either ineffective, leaking or straining the neighbouring tooth, leading to cracking.

Major Effects

  • Maximal Tooth Preservation : It offers better long-term dental health, as it leaves a larger portion of your natural tooth structure preserved, as compared to a full crown.
  • Enhanced Strength and Resilience : Bonded in place, these restorations can add considerable strength to the tooth, in some cases restoring up to 75% of the original strength. They are more durable and can last significantly longer than large direct fillings, up to 30 years with proper care.
  • Higher Aesthetic Quality and Fit : As they are milled in a laboratory, they have a high precision of fit, which minimises the marginal gaps, thereby limiting the occurrence of recurrent decay. Porcelain choices are also available in custom colours to create a practically undetectable repair look.
