Pit and fissure sealants are a preventive dentistry procedure in which a thin, protective coating of plastic is applied to the chewing surfaces (occlusal surfaces) of the posterior (back) teeth (molars and premolars). This sealant enters the deep grooves and depressions (pits and fissures) of these surfaces. It solidifies to form a smooth layer that resists food particles and bacteria, effectively preserving the surfaces.

Indications

  • Deep Pits and Fissures : These are natural, deep grooves and complex cavities in teeth that a toothbrush bristle cannot access and clean well.
  • Risk of developing Caries : Patients with moderate and high risk of developing dental cavities, especially on the posterior chewing surfaces of the teeth, have been identified.
  • Early Intervention : Teeth that have just erupted (not decayed) are usually treated immediately after they have been fully exposed above the gum line.

Effects

  • Physical Barrier : The sealant substance literally protects the enamel against the acids formed by cavity-causing bacteria, as well as plaque and food-related debris.
  • Significant Decay Reduction : They are very effective and can help lower the incidence of occlusal decay by up to 80% during the initial two years, with proper care, and for several years thereafter.
  • Smoother Surface : The sealant fills in the uneven, jagged grooves, resulting in a better-cleaned surface that can be brushed more efficiently each day, and removes plaque more effectively.
