Overdentures refer to a type of removable dentures that are placed on top and supported by a few existing natural tooth roots or, more commonly, by dental implants. Such implants or roots are installed with an attaching mechanism (such as snaps, clips, or bars) that locks firmly to the bottom of the denture, making it three times more retentive and stable than traditional complete dentures.
Indications
- Problems of Retention with Conventional Dentures : The dentures become unstable and painful, and the movement of conventional complete dentures is frequent due to severe bone loss (atrophy) in the patient's jaw.
- Small Budget Fixed Restorations : People would want an alternative to full-arch restorations that is more comfortable and stable than regular dentures but less expensive than fixed versions, such as All-on-4 or All-on-6.
- Masticatory Improvement : Patients are interested in significant benefits in chewing efficiency and comfort, as the implant anchors the prosthesis to prevent it from rocking or becoming dislodged during operation
Effects
- Improved Stability and Confidence : The clip or bar attachments provide a secure fit, eliminating any tendency to slip or click, allowing patients to eat, talk, and smile with greater security and confidence than with conventional dentures.
- Less Bone Loss : The dental implants that support the overdenture provide stimulation to the jawbone, which in turn helps reduce or even halt further bone resorption and maintain the height and structure of the facial bones.
- Better Comfort and Tissue Health : Since most of the chewing is supported by the implants, the denture exerts less pressure on the gums, causing a reduced level of gum irritation and sore areas.
